Cider Braised Venison Roast
I am so scared of cooking anything venison other than ground. I just feel like if you cook it wrong it could go bad. And honestly, it does. It will taste gamey and be tough because venison has next to no fat to keep it juicy. So it’s really really important when you’re cooking a venison roast to make sure you have plenty of liquid but of course not too much. This venison roast was simple, and delicious. The perfect fall treat.
I cooked it in the Dutch oven, so a one pot dinner. If you don’t have a Dutch oven you can use a roast pan. Something deep is best. But if you don’t have a Dutch oven I definitely suggest this one. It’s non toxic, and non stick and versatile. We love our Dutch oven and use it ALL of the time. This meal does require some time in the oven though, about 3 hours. So I would make this on a Sunday or Saturday if you don’t work from home. I wouldn’t suggest doing it in the crockpot because I do think it’ll dry out, but you could probably do it in the Instapot I would assume. Just decrease the length of time!
You don’t have to add in the cider either. You can totally skip it. I just added it for a splash of fall!
Ingredients:
5 lbs. of Venison Back Strap or Roast Cut
2 Cups Beef Bone Broth
1 Cup Apple Cider
Salt
Pepper
Garlic
5-6 Potatoes
10 Large Carrots Cut or a Bag of Baby Carrots
Onions
Bay Leaf
Directions:
Spray Dutch oven with non stick cooking spray.
Add potatoes cut in quarters to the bottom, and carrots on top of them.
Then add the venison, and the rest of the ingredients adding the wet first then the dry. You add the wet first so the wet ingredients don’t wash off the dry ingredients from the meat!
Cook in oven on 250 for about 3 hours. More or less time depending on how hot your oven runs and how large the piece of meat is you are cooking.
Once it is done cooking, remove it from the oven and let sit for about a half hour. This allows the juices to rest and the meat to absorb them.
Serve each person with some potatoes, carrots, and roast. Plus make some fresh homemade bread!
Enjoy!
